The classic Paloma cocktail is made with Fresca grapefruit soda, but I didn’t know that until I visited Mexico earlier this year. Here’s the version I’ve always made, which is really tasty.


– A generous shot of silver tequila (1.5-2 fl oz, depending on how strong you like it)
– 1/4 cup of grapefruit juice (I like Simply Grapefruit ruby red, but pick your favorite)
– Ice
– Kosher salt
– Tajín chili-lime powder, to taste


– Add the ice, tequila, and grapefruit juice to your glass, and mix lightly
– Sprinkle with salt and/or Tajín, if desired
– Garnish with your citrus slice, if desired


– You can rim your glass with salt and/or Tajín, instead of sprinkling it on directly
– If you like your drink a little less bitter (or even sweet), mix some honey with the tequila before adding the ice
– If you like your drink a little weaker (or you just like bubbles), top it up with some club soda or seltzer
